Did we discuss this last year?
Do you call that bread/cornbread mixture Stuffing or Dressing?
Do you get together with friends/family/ go out to eat?
I'm baking Pumpkin, Apple and Pecan pies. I have a GF bringing a Mrs. Smith's pie, and other people are bringing side dishes.
So, what about the Canadians? I know you celebrate in Oct., but do you do the same type of food?
Sara in Fla.
PS-Rosey-I have given up on pie crust, using Pillisbury. Somehow it is just better, and less flour on the floor.

Glad to see WWQP again

I had almost given up seeing the BB ever again. Glad my cyber friends are in touch again.
LAURA- I too was unaware, so glad you are OK. I know the "waiting" game is the worst!
We planned a kayak trip for over a month. Finally did go over to the Tally, Pessacola area of Fla. on Thur. last. The rains from IDA had dumped lots of water, so even though the sky was blue, air cool, the river we wanted to kayak in was swollen over the banks, and across the road. The State Park people wern't even on duty that day. The water was only about 2 ft. under some of the bridges.
So, we went on to the Yellow River. Didn't know Fla. had one. The current was swift, but we paddled about 2 hours against it. It only took us about 2o min. to come back in the swift current.
I had been having acid reflux off and on for over a year, and boy, it hit me like a ton of bricks on Fri. night. GERD is a new word I have learned. Not fun. Went to my favorite nurse practictioner, who told me all about the chemistry of acid in the stomach, etc. Long story short, I can eat things other than apple sauce now. It was a rough few days.
GOOD NEWS! I have finished my DD's quilt. The scalloped borders came out great. Just have to think of a catchy label to put on it, and it will hit the US Mail after Thanksgiving day.
We are having an early Thanksgiving this Sunday evening. Going to invite the single, divorced, widows, etc. Should have about 12 or 13 here.
I got out all the inherited silverware yesterday (keep it in the bank safe deposit box) and will give it a shine up tomorrow. Going to have the traditional turkey, etc.
Sara in Fla.

On Table Runners

I forgot to mention the fabrics in the two table runners are by new young fabric designers. The first, Bluebird Dishes, is by Stephanie Brandenburg for Camelot Cottons, a Canadian fabric company. Stephanie is from South Amana, Iowa. The second, Shade Garden, is by Michelle Engel Bencsko for Henry Glass. Michelle also has designed and marketed an organic line of cottons with a friend of hers. I feel both gals have unique looks we haven't seen in the fabric world previously.

Yes, Jane it is a great relief to get the results I got. As you all know that waiting is difficult, but I tried to keep positive thoughts. Thanks again.

LAURA AND OTHER STUFF

I must have been asleep at the switch when you posted originally about kidney concerns. I'm so glad now to read that there isn't a significant medical problem. I'll bet you are still emitting a sigh of relief.

I'm enjoying a catch up day after back to back absences from home. I didn't get a lot of sleep at the quilt retreat this past week and am still catching up on that as well a laundry, picking up stuff left lying around upon departure etc. It poured like a monsoon most of the week but it is glorious since arriving home. Nights are in the 30s now but days get up close to 70 and I open the house wide for a few hours mid day. The leaves are down and the beautiful deep blue sky is cheerful to say the least. Shadow was thoroughly spoiled after her surrogate parents treated her to home cooked goodies while I was gone. She went hungry for a few days upon her return home but she got hungry enough to chow down her Purina One Senior dog food this morning. I also think she is wisely adjusting her food intake to her gradually reducing activity level in her old age. Unfortunately, I have had a bit of a problem following her very wise example.

I've been making some progress on the wedding quilt but still am a long way from reaching that light at the end of the tunnel.

Time to rest my eyes for a while before I prepare a covered dish for community assoc. supper tonight.

Jane

YAHOO CHAT

SARA and anyone else interested the URL is http://www.groups.yahoo.com/ . You can find it here.
http://www.piecedtreepatterns.com/tiny_ones/page/6/ With any luck I can post a picture(s) for you of some I have finished. I made my end pieces of the focus fabric (also in the rectangles)to feature it more. The 3 fabrics are strip pieced, subcut, then flipped every other one. It just happens to some people, so the doctor says. Unless things would worsen I am good to go. No pun intended. Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. I fully believe it helped.
So on the quilting front I am making table runners for so many people for Christmas! The pattern is new to me and a quick way to show off a nice piece of fabric. The themes are endless. I am also making surprises for the grandkids and having fun doing it.
Thanks for caring and asking for the update Mayme.

Joyful quilters vs.not so much

I've had a wonderful few days at a sort-of-local quilt guild retreat. This group is about 28 miles from my house, mostly retired military wives, and a few others thrown in for good measure. We arrived Fri. at 9:00 Am left about 7 pm, the same on Sat. Today arrived at 10:00 AM and left at 3:00. We each worked on our own projects, finished up UFO's etc. I cut the scalloped border and did the bias binding on about 1/2 of DD's Christmas quilt gift. Then today I worked on some embrodered blocks for a QOV.
The difference in the "Joy" factor of this group is so much better than the other local group I belong to. This other group is only about 2 mi. from my house. I don't know if it's because the closer group is filled with women who work full time, and maybe are stressed out, or exactly what it is, but there is an obvious difference. Maybe it's that the other group is filled with retired military wives who are happy to be where they are, and not striving for anything.
Meanwhile the Navy put on their Air/sea show, with the Blue Angels -their precision flying team- flying over. What a grand show!
The company and food was great, the only downfall is that now I feel a sore throat starting, so am going to bed at 8:30 to get lots of sleep. Took Airborn, vit. C, and hope to sleep it off.
The 2 doggies were happy to see me. This was their first time to be boarded. Guess they did well, they don't seem to have any trauma.
SOAP-there is a local lady who makes goat's milk soap. I keep forgetting to go get some from her on Sunday afternoon at the green market --it's only on Sunday from 12 t0 4. My skin is drying out, so maybe it will help some.
All the extra hand washing we are supposed to do for the H1N1 prevention is doing trauma to my hands.
Sara in Fla.

MIA

Celia in NB doesn't even respond to emails these days. I really miss her and her unfailing sense of humor. Katie in UP MI has a blog but hasn't posted in better part of a year. Both of these ladies must be very busy. Anna is somewhat active on the Yahoo site which is usually spam free. When one appears it is quickly slapped down by our web master. A lot of those active on that board are equally active here. Some are still complaining about having difficulty getting onto this site. I don't understand why.

Indian summer here right now. Temperature was in the 30s F when I got up but was fairly well into the 70s most of the day with bright sunshine. I enjoyed having the house wide open.

Getting ready to head for annual quilt retreat in Toccoa, GA tomorrow after quilt guild meeting. My buddy and I have shared a room there for years. She's 80 years young but happy to let me do the driving. I'm not taking a class and have elected to sign up for SOYO (sew on your own) hoping to make serious headway on the king size wedding quilt. Now that's impressive. I do have a cell phone but it is seldom switched on ! The reception here is poor , I only have it in case of need when I am out and about . Consequently I am terrified of the thing. Very occasionally it will ring and then the panic starts....where are my glasses...where is the phone etc ... so Heather, I am well impressed !

Feeling heaps better after the shingles. The other board was fun but it became infested with spammers and it spoiled it for the rest of us. I think of Bertie in Illinois, Celia in New Brunswick, MJ in Arizona, Linda Harrington in Minnesota, Katie in the UP and so on. Perhaps boards have their day, I don't know.

Over the summertime I have been helping out a soapmaker whose handmade soap I discovered at a gift shop not far from here. Tired of throwing out the ends of soap with each guest who stays at the B&B here, I asked her if she would make smaller bars of soap for my guests. I now have lavender soap, honey lemon, almond, etc. in attractive small bars and I give each guest a small plastic bag to take the soap home with them. Voila...no soap ends for me to clean up. I also have a small basket of her larger bars of soap here for guests to buy if they wish. She has had a booth on Saturdays at our local Farmer's Market all summer and I've gone into town to help her for about 2 hours each week. For that, she pays me with one free bar of soap. I will work for free soap...lol. Her website is: www.windmillhill.ca if anyone in Canada is interested. She doesn't ship across the border. It's wonderful soap.

The weather, which we Canadians talk about all the time...has been beautiful today (for November). People were walking around in shirtsleeves but for most of the week past we had fat white rain...that translates into show showers. I believe Grace, further north and east of us, has snow on the ground. Hard to see 'white' coming so soon, isn't it Grace. Winter is long enough without the insult of having it start too early in the season. Tomorrow promises more of the same. I hope to have a quiet day with a good book, do some more sewing on the binding of my latest quilt and sit in the sun even if I wrap up.

Rosey

Where is Anna?

Has anyone heard from Anna in Spain? Pedigree Dogs Exposed premieres Tuesday, December 10, 8:00 p.m. ET/PT "

I watched it on YouTube a few months ago, and it was very educational, and quite shocking at times. I was particularly appalled at the mother/son and father/daughter breeding that is condoned by the UK's kennel club.

Accidentally posted this over on the main BB page (no caffeine yet this a.m. ....)

Thank You, Jill, for your help.

This is a test - hope it works. I've been trying to find out how to post on the board and could not, for the life of me, do more than reply to someone's message. Finally, I e-mailed Jill and she graciously told me how to get on both this and the Yahoo site. I finished a lap quilt for DDIL#2 and wanted to show it. That's another challenge. It's in the camera and now I have to figure out to get it here. She wanted a pink and black color scheme - Yuck! The pink turned out to be more toward salmon, so I paired it with many shades of green and called it Pink and Black and Forty Shades of Green (she is Irish born). It turned out nicer than the description!

Margaret from Long Island, NY

Wednesday in Chilly Minnesota

Remember when we used to do a snoopy dance when we finished a project. Well, I am dancin' this morning. I finished putting together my Blooming 9-patch last night and actually finished a a few other UFO's a couple weeks ago. With a quilt show coming up in March, I have a little incentive to get some projects moved to the "Done" pile. I have so many projects waiting for me that I really needed to get some of the oldies but goodies (and a few not so goodies) completed. After a bag - see below! - I am starting on my BC blocks next. Lisa, who MQs some of my things, has me on her list so I need to have something to give her when she calls!

Last Thur & Fri I went to the Des Moines AQS with a couple of my friends. We saw lots of people from our area there as well and got lots of good ideas. While the show was very good with TONS of vendors, our state show is outstanding so we are a bit spoiled here in Minnesota when it comes to quilt shows. We didn't see many big quilt kits for sale. Bags were popular, there was quite a bit of hand work--embroidery -- and wool everything. Wool wall hangings, wool applique quilts, wool bags, etc. I ordered a wool wall hanging with Ecclesiastes 3 - "To everything there is a season..." around the border. They showed it in a black frame and it was gorgeous AND a wool bag kit just happened to find its way home with me. I am hoping to start on that today... Are the rest of you seeing lots of wool in your areas? Or what seems to be the "in" thing where you are?

Better get DD up for school.. The Gel-Cumulus is my favorite because of my high arches. Shape of the last matching one's foot is so important. I love wool socks, too. Hikers wear them because they won't blister. I've started wearing the shorty version on the golf course.

QUILT GUILD met today. Our program was given by Sue Nickels. Her quilts are gorgeous, and of course I had to buy two of her books and a couple patterns. She gave an all-day workshop yesterday that I missed because that's my volunteer work day. She seems like a wonderful person and I'm sure is a very good teacher.

Must go walk the dog now. Beautiful weather here since Sunday; blue sky, sunshine (what is that???) and everyone is so happy because of it.

Shingles/walking/shoes/etc.

Ah-went walking at he beach on Sat. morning after watching the sun come up. There is nothing better than a "cool" morning walking at the beach at low tide.
Back to home this noon.
Last year when I signed up for the 1/2 marathon I knew that I'd need a group to keep my motivation up. The local Breast Cancer group that I was supporting teamed up with Jeff Galloway, who was a 1972 Olympic winner. He has supported himself helping others run, holding running camps, etc.
His method has a person walking/jogging, off and on. The fast people 5 min run/i min walk, the slow people 20 sec. run/ 40 sec. walk, and all in between. The idea is to finish healthy, with no injuries.
His statement is that if you are over 50 you should do every other day. Too much stress on the legs and feet otherwise. That keeps us from guilt also.
SHOES-Everybody is different. I've found that Asic Gel Nimbus are great for me. They wear out fast. They are all made in China, so try on several pairs. (don't know what happened to my font)
When you find a pair you like-try it for 2 weeks then buy a second pair just like them so when #1 wears out you will have a standby.
Don't forget the socks. There are so many of the new blends now that are better than cotton. I found that Smart Wool socks are great even in hot weather because I don't get blisters. After buying 1 pair for $$$ I got them at the discount on line places.
Kelly's Running, ZAPO's, Siera Trading Co. all have discounts if you find the size and type you want. Shoes are like a good bra, when you find one that supports you, and you like buy several. The style will change in 6 months.
Shingles-yikes- I'm so sorry for those who have to suffer so. My DH had it several years ago. After a week of not saying anything, he said he had a rash on his stomach, then on his back. When he finally went to the DR. all he could do was take Tylonal for the pain, as the original outbreak was over. Remembering this I asked my family Dr. for the shot when I became 60, as my insurance covered it. Yes, it is expensive, but better than the pain.
All for now.
Sara in cooler Fla.

Shingles...

You are right Jane, I've been let off very lightly. The stabbing pains were bad last w/end and it was three days before I was able to see the Dr. The anti-viral medication I have been taking this week seems to have prevented the virus from spreading, I am still taking pain killers for the head pains.. My tummy has not taken kindly to the drugs and that has been my biggest problem . I am very weary and only get up to take medication before mid-day. I'm lucky I am able to do that. I have the "spots" on the scalp, along my hairline, down my forehead along my eyebrow and around my eye. The Dr says to be very careful to check that I can see clearly out of the eye . So far so good.

On a brighter note, the weather has improved considerably and I have been enjoying sitting out in the garden. I haven't left the property since I went to the Dr last Tuesday and I've appreciated my surroundings.. It occurs to me that I take too little time to enjoy our garden and situation here.... rushing off here and there and for why ?

All the best to the walkers for a good week.
Marion.

ANOTHER HAPPY NOTE

Talked to DD#1 today. Two of the grands are laid up with temps of 102 and are wiped out. The third had same symptoms last week and only missed two days of school and ran in a regional cross country event today. Cross your fingers. They are all prime targets for H1N1 as teenagers and there hasn't even been enough vaccine even to take care of hospital personnel. It's all over school and university where DD works. I'll be very relieved when I hear that they've bounced back.

Jane

HERPES ZOSTER (SHINGLES)

Marion, hang in there. Your post appears to indicate that your dose of shingles, while very uncomfortable, isn't as agonizing as it can be and is so often. I hope it hasn't worsened since your post.

I'm putting this on the board for a reason. EVERYONE OUT THERE GET A SHINGLES VACCINE SHOT. Anyone who has had chicken pox is at risk. Anyone with a comprimized immune system, Judy Pete, that probably means you should have a shot and even if you've had shingles recently it doesn't mean you are immune. I know whereof I speak. Shingles, (herpes zoster virus) will stay in your spine forever and if you get old enough your anti bodies for that virus weaken or if you are having chemo or for many other reasons it can come roaring back. About 13 years ago I had what I thought was a migraine coming on with the typical pounding in the left side of my head just over the ear so ignored it and we left for a road trip to OH to leave Shadow with field trainer and then to Rochester to visit DD and the grands. I figured the pain would last a day or so and then I'd be good as new. By the second day on the road I had fierce stabs of pain in my left eye. It felt as if there were barbed wire in there and bright light was making me very uncomfortable. As I suppose most of you know, the virus attacks a nerve, most often running around the ribs under the arm and into the abdominal area. Well, mine was the optic nerve. As soon as we arrived at DD's Al took me to the ER at Strong Memorial Hospital, affiliated with the U of R medical school. It was my misfortune to run into a trauma doc who didn't know his #%@ from his elbow. A resident urged him to call in an opthalmologist or neurologist (either of which would have known exactly what the problem was). Of course by the time he saw me I was drugged up and they'd used some topical analgesic as well as demerol or some such thing. He sent me back to DD's and she and DSIL insisted I get into their bed. By midnight I was in agony and was afraid I was dying (brain tumor?) Al took me back tothe ER and I ran into another resident who was very concerned and the previous one came in as well. When the trauma doc arrived he was even worse than the preceeding one. He treated me and the female resident as if we were six years old. He did a lot of arm patting and telling me that I had abrasions on my cornea. I tried to convince him that I had terrific head pain as well as eye and that there had been no trauma to my eye. Both residents urged a consult with an ophalmologist and while he treated the male resident somewhat neutrally he really dissed the young lady. They doped me so heavily that I slept for a while and in the morning Al took me back to DD's where he gathered our belongings and we headed for home. ER idiot gave me an antibiotic salve for my "abrasions" which of course increased the pain and I had an allergic reaction to it as well. Poor Al was so exhausted we just had to stop so he could get some sleep and by the time we arrived in little old Sylva, NC and my doc's office which she kept open for us I was sure I was dying and so did Al who was normally unflappable. She had trouble getting a look at the eye for all the swelling but she guessed it was herpes. She drugged me up and ordered a brain scan to be sure. I met the ophalmologist in the local ER next morning and he and the trauma guy there guess it was herpes and when the scan came back "normal" but which did indicate a long standing sinus infection which indicated that even though I had been oblivious to the infection it had adversely effected my immune system. Since the infection was so long standing by the time it was diagnosed all attempts to relieve the pain, severity and duration I was sick as a dog from mid June onset until well into September. I spent most of that time in the darkest room in the house with one of those sleeping masks as I couldn't stand light, couldn't read as one of the eye drops I was getting was to paralyse the iris so as not to irritate the eye further, couldn't sleep for all the narcotics and pain. I tried to listen to recorded books but couldn't concentrate. To cut to the trace I would have paid every dime I had for relief. When the vaccine became available a couple of years ago it was a couple of months before Medicare started paying for it but I was the first one in town to have it and would gladly have paid 100 time the $200 it cost me. A friend in the guild had it recently around the ribs and she not only couldn't stand to wear a bra but had to turn her tee shirt inside out as the little seam allowances drove her nuts. Hers was treated promptly so the pain killers help her but not 100%. It lasted six weeks.

It's a bad, bad bug. I have corneal scars which have caused problems in getting a good correction with glasses. My DB had the same thing which was treated promptly and still his tear duct was damaged and his cornea had edema and it has remained very cloudy. Run, don't walk to your doc and get the vaccine.

Jane

Back on track

I just did my walk and am going to paint walls next. Yesterday was a lost day, as I wasn't feeling well and did a lot of comforting myself with food. :-( Today is a new day though, and I am back on track.
My problems with my feet are due mostly to my weight. I wear orthotics and have been working with the person who provides them to come up with the best orthotic and shoes for what I need. I just have to accept the fact that my feet cannot carry this weight without hurting and find the right distance and speed to burn off some weight, increase my metabolism but not cause injury. It's hard to keep the pace slow when I just want to motor! I was having some hip pain on Wed. and DD#1 suggested walking 3 days and taking a day off. That seems to have worked as there was no pain today.
Also managed to get my flu shot. I have asthma and a 5-month old grandson with whom I spend a lot of time, so wanted to get it right away. The Health Unit recommended to DD that everyone caring for the baby should have one. I'm glad I got it; shortages are beginning to occur. There are a lot of sick kids away from schools, and the hockey teams are laying off for awhile. DGS Jack's gymnastics class had 3 out of 10 kids last week. DD is keeping him home from there until he's had his shot. They run multiple classes at once, so there are many kids rotating around the equipment all at once.
hugs to all and kudo to the walkers.

Friday evening

MARION in NZ – so sorry to read you have shingles. That is miserable stuff. I’ve heard one can get them again, so that may explain Rosey’s recurrent itches.

JANE IN NC - My favorite place to buy athletic shoes is http://www.roadrunnersports.com/ They indicate which type foot each style of shoe is designed for (low, normal, or high arches) as well as one’s height, weight, and number of miles-per-week one runs/walks. They aren’t a discount place, but I found heaven when I found their catalog and last advice. Sometimes you can score on their sale merchandise, esp. if you don’t have high arches.

ALUMINUM Xmas trees are being sold again. Once was enough for me, back in the mid/late 1960s. Ugh...... DH's prize is a tabletop "bubble lights" tree that he bought a few years ago, reminiscent and almost identical to one his family had when he was a child. He takes great delight in hauling it out every year.

Doris
