- 8/31/96 - Good Day! I recently purchased EQ3. Is there any online group/chat available or helpline? Slowly going thru the lessons. Am very anxious to try designing lang0255@maroon.tc.umn.edu
- 8/31/96 - I subscribe to many mags, buy many books and have, over the past year or two, become disenchanted with the scope of the projects presented. These darn "Wall Quilts" and cutesy-pie projects! Lambs, ducks, geese, apples and hearts! Ugh! Even the best of the magazines have fallen under the spell of the "quick" project! Doesn't anyone have the
patience anymore to spend half a year or more turning out a real bed
quilt? judygrow@blast.net
- 8/31/96 - Greetings: I currently have a Singer Touch &Sew #771. I am considering a new machine and am wondering about the brand to purchase. I do several quilts a year and enjoy classes as often

- 8/31/96 - Hi. I am going to make an attempt to ask my question in a fashion that you will hopefully understand. I am a home sewer, and I am looking for a computer program for Win95 that will allow me to track my childs measurements, and also as a added bonus.. offer the correct alterations to fit this pattern to her measurements. Ok.. I know I am asking alot of a program, but this is a frustration to me, I have a tall thin child who is very difficult to sew for. And I am not all that great at altering patterns correctly. Well, thank you for any help you can send me.
Sincerely Frustrated Sewer.. CatM. Catmid@ix.netcom.com

- 8/30/96 - I have been told that manufacturers of fabric such as VIP and so forth sell a poorer quality of the same pattern fabric to discount stores. Is this true? Does any one know? I can't see how it can be. A brand name company wouldn't want their name on a poor quality fabric. I wouldn't think. I've been told that the weave isn't as tight but it looks the same as the "good" stuff. I can imagine that there are "seconds" or imperfect runs of fabrics and they might be sold for less but surely to goodness they
would be labeled? Any information out there? Is the fabric with brand names the same quality as the same brand names in discount stores? Rose. rosep@freenet.hamilton.on.ca

- 8/30/96 - I just wanted to post to everyone who I received a Maple Leaf Block from in the recent Maple Leaf Block Exchange. I have completed my quilt! And I have everyone who's block is in this quilt to thank for its success! I did a number of different "new to me" techniques on this project and though I will definitly be refining some of these techniques as time goes on, the quilt is georgeous...The autumn colors are great and this
quilt will definitly be a "keeper" for me. Thank you to everyone. Julia Sidebottom ap066@detroit.freenet.org
- 8/30/96 - I am new to quilting but not to sewing. I am looking for a machine for machine piecing but I would like a machine that can also do embroidery from templates and from scanned images. Is there a

machine for embroidery. BKLEAR@IGSRGLIB01.ER.USGS.GOV

- 8/29/96 - Hello,I am living in Spain and I am new to patchwork and quilting. I would very much appreciate some suggestions how to get around my following problem: Having pinned the three layers of material together, I tried to machine quilt my project. But the machine didn't seem to feed the materials properly. I have a Bernina 1090, used presser foot #1 and 8, a transparent upper thread, sewing needle #90 and #3 as the length of my
stiches. But obviously, there is something wrong in what I have been
doing. I would very much appreciate any technical advice and suggestions
to what accessories I have to use with my machine in order to get a good
looking machine quilted stiches. Thanks! fenaroli@lander.es

- 8/29/96 - I am looking for the pattern for a buzzsaw blade to represent the big saws used in a redwood lumber mill that we toured in California last summer. I found one in a book or magazine several months ago and drew one so I'd be ready when time came to start on the project. Now I can't find my drawing, nor the original in any of the magazines or books in my collection. It is based on a 4 x 4 (?) patch block with half-square triangles representing teeth placed around a solid block center. Any ideas where I can find that special block again? Thanks for your help. - 8/29/96 - After a recent posting in which I told Escapee Quiltlovers that "Going to Pieces" had been mailed recently, I have had several inquiries about the whole subject of Escapees Quiltlovers and Going to Pieces. Thank you all for ask Escapee Quiltlovers are connected by two threads: (1) we are all RVers who are members of a great organization called Escapees, and (@) we all love quilts. Some of us are brand new to the endeavor and haven't done
much quiltmaking, others are experts, some are even pros. We keep in touch
by a newsletter called Going to Pieces which I write semi-occassionally.
It is made up of letters I receive from various RVing quiltlovers who are
wandering all over the nation and Canada. I excerpt their messages and we
all get to share the projects, discoveries and challenges (spelled
p-r-o-b-l-e-m-s). Being on the road keeps many from having guild
activities, but it lets us search out quilt shops and shows, museums, and
other quilters we would never get to meet at home. To learn more about
ESCAPEES, just type it in as you surf, or go to LYCOS and look under RVing.
It is a great, supportive organization. Keep yourselves in stitches, and
try not to needle anyone! Holly bobholly@sierra.net

- 8/29/96 - I have just discovered that all 1,001 of the Kansas City Star patterns have been reprinted by the Groves of KC, Missouri. I just received volume 1 (out of 10) with over 100 of the patterns. Wow! Lots of
history and the books are spiral bound for laying flat. For more
information visit my web site where I put up a page telling more (no
financial connection to the Groves -- just want to pass this along).

- 8/29/96 - Question: I have been given a quilt dating to 1930. The problem is that the quilt top was previously restored and machined stitched to a sheet from late 1960/early 1970. My question is should I remove the machine stitches and the back sheet and restore the quilt to close to
it's orginal state? The batting is a blanket that has been pieced. Please respond either to the bulletin board or me directly at Rachel_Laiche_at_BMC-RD@ccmail.bmc.com

- 8/31/96 - I have heard of a quilt shop in the
Orlando, Florida area called:
Queen Ann's Lace 715 E.Vine St. Kissimmee, FL 34744
(407)846-7998. I've never been to this shop but I hope this helps you
with your search. Katherine.
- 8/30/96 - In Orlando there are several quiltshops, but the one with which I am familiar is Yesterday's Quilts on International Drive,in the same little shopping center as the Dansk outlet.(Sometimes people are
familiar with its location but not with the quiltshop). It is very close
to the Holiday Inn. The staff is most pleasant and helpful, fabric
selection is large and well organized (unless there is a sale going on and
we have all been rummaging around and messing stuff up!) They have lots of
supplies, and the classes look very tempting, although I have never taken a
class there. One of the first things I do when I arrive wherever I am going
is look in the yellow pages under "Quilts" It's a great help in setting my priorities. If you are there for the winter, you should be able to pick up some lovely quilt shows. I am personally familiar with the one held in the Coral Gables/Miami area in February each year. My quilting daughter-in-law was involved with that one. The shop I am familiar with in Miami is Quilt Scene. If you ask at any quilt shop in Florida, you can probably get a little drawing of the state with numbers representing each shop in the state and a listing of the name and address of each of them. ENJOY!! Holly

- 8/28/96 - Last year when I posted a message asking quilters to help me supply quilts to children infected/afffected by AIDS, the response was wonderful and we were able to present all the children served by our Visiting Nurse Association with quilts.
This year I have become aware of an even more pressing need: Native American
children (and adults) living on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota
are facing another cold winter. Many of these families live under conditions
of severe poverty (Pine Ridge has one of the lowest per capita incomes in all
the United States) and many have no central heat.
Circle of Children is an organization whose aim is to support the children of
Pine Ridge by pairing them up with sponsors who will foster in them the sense
of self-esteem that is every child's right. This fall Circle of Children is
asking for help in providing warm bedding for the families it serves. Knowing
how generous quilters are - and how you helped my AIDS children last
Christmas - I am once again turning to you for help. If you are interested in
helping us provide quilts and comforters for these beautiful children of Pine
Ridge, please e-mail me (ChanaMass@aol.com) or the director of Circle of
Children, Shivani Baker (SHIVAB@aol.com) and we will send you more
information. You couldn't be spending your time better than in helping us
keep these children warm this winter.
In peace and love, Chana Rivka Shemaya, LICSW

What a terrific group of people is out there: wanting to tell their own "first quilt" stories, give hard-earned advice, make worthwhile suggestions, and willing to spend the time encouraging me (one person even volunteered to give me a kick in the can if I needed it to get
started!). Thanks to everyone! I think I'll make a quilt.

- 8/26/96 - Thanks to all the people who reacted so quickly to my problem. I think however that I have to clarify my question: It is not pencil marks but very fine lines made by a BALLPOINT pen. I've done a lot of needlepoint and cross-stitch, but have never been much of a sewer (putting in zippers defeated me when I was younger!). - 8/25/96 - Hi! I'm posting a question here on behalf of my mother. She's having
problems printing blocks with Electric Quilt 3. When she tries to print
a 4" sq. block it comes out 8" long and 4" wide. It's always printing
double the length. We're wondering if this problem is peculiar to us and
we just haven't figured out what mistake we're making or is this indeed a
problem with the program. Any help would be much appreciated. Please
send all responses to me (Chuck) at csimon@cais.com.
- 8/25/96 - Hi! I am trying to locate some fabric wholesalers, primarily in Canada who
sell cotton fabric and other quilt-related items. Would also appreciate any
tips anyone can give me on researching this on the Internet. I was quickly
overwhelmed by the amount of wholesalers, and had great difficulty trying to
narrow it down to fabric. I am doing this research for a friend who is
planning to open a shop in Smithers, BC. Many thanks.

- 8/25/96 - Hi, my name is Connie. I am in the midst of packing up and moving to Conifer,
Colorado by the end of this week and decided to take a break. I know I'm
going to suffer withdrawals for not being able to go to my quilt guild and my
bee group meeting. Does anyone know of a quilting bee group in the Conifer
area -- can be a day bee because I will not be working. In fact, that would
probably be my preference. Also what about a Guild? Who do I contact to find
out about joining a local guild? It may be that I'll need to join the larger
guild in Denver (Conifer is about 35 miles SW of Denver) Any ideas? Contact
me back at WHEELERCL@MSN.COM. Thanks
- 8/25/96 - Just needed to post this somewhere where I hoped people would truly understand. Spent almost a year creating a quilt to enter at the County Fair. The fair has had the same deadline for bringing crafts every year so when I got the fair booklet I pulled out the application, as usual,
and threw the book away. Called on a Sunday to make sure the deadline
time for that day was still 6PM. Was informed that deadline period was
the day before-Saturday and there'd be no exceptions. I'm FINALLY verbal
again. Took a week. This strip quilt made up of varying shades of
purples from deep to pale white strips was formed into what's called "An
Aztec Pattern." Then I hand quilted criss-crossing in the center and at
the ends. Finished it off with deep purple satin blanket binding. Sigh.
Its the best thing I've ever done. I'll make something better soon, I'm
sure. But, hopefully, only other quilters can understand how broken
hearted I was last weekend. Annie
- 8/25/96 - I am new on the Internet and thoroughly enjoying it. I hope someone can help me
with this problem: I took a class in machine quilting and the little sampler
we made looks quite pretty so I decided to turn it into a cushion cover. But,
I cannot get the markings out, pencil so I thought. It now turns out the
teacher marked with a very fine ballpoint pen. Does anyone know how to get the
marks out, the fabric is homespun or plain cream calico. My email address in

- 8/24/96 - Thank you so much for your home page. Do you know where I can get help on purchasing a good professional quilting machine? Is it worth it to purchase and start a business, or should I just get my quilts machine quilted and forget buying one? Thank you for your help. PEGM@greenapple.com
- 8/24/96 - Hi, I had such a wonderful response to my question on Annemieke Mein that I thought I would try another! I am going to a seminar in Boston in two weeks. I have scheduled an extra day to take a side trip to Keepsake Quilting in Center Harbor, N.H. Has anyone been there? Is it worth the side trip? Would I do just as well at Cambridge Quilt Company? If you think the trip is worthwhile, what's the best way to go? Rent a car or
take the bus? Any other suggestions on fabric stores in Boston (not just
quilting) or any "must sees" on the way to Keepsake Quilting? I
appreciate any and all hints, suggestions or orders. Robin in Orlando @ mhorner1@worldnet.att.net

- 8/23/96 - I am looking for a pattern that I saw in a quilting store a few months ago. (I went to the store, and they don't remember having it). The pattern had a hummingbird with flowers, possibly appliqued. It was shown on the package done in watercolor-look fabric, and gave the
impression of stained glass. It was probably best used as a wall
hanging or the center piece of a quilt. If you have seen a pattern like
this, I would appreciated any information you can supply. Thanks-Paula.

- 8/19/96 - I recently bought an old tablecloth with a print of the Hawaiian Islands on it. My guess is that it is about 30-40 years old. It has some rust stains on it, which is very common on anything that's been on
the islands for a while. My husband had the great idea of using it as
the back for a Hawaiian style quilt. My question is should I wash the
table cloth before using it? If so, how? Is there a way to set the
colors? (The print is red and blue) And should I try to remove the rust
stains, or keep them as part of the heritage of Hawaii? Any ideas?

- 8/19/96 - My name is Leanna and I am currently a State Rep for this project. What
we do is make quilts that are then given to the childen in the St. Judes
and Shriners hospitals. We are always happy when we can get others
involved in this project. What I am asking here is if there is anyone who
would like to get involved. We are always accepting donations of quilts
(small lap top size approx. 40x60), quilt tops (same size), or any scraps
of fabric you may wish to discard, these are then turned into quilts and
delivered the the very ill children in these hospitals. This is such a
good cause, and donations are what help keep it going. This is not
supported by anyone but the members and donators. Therefore, any help and
donations are greatly appreciated and help to bring smiles to very sick
kids. If you are willing to support, donate or just want more
information, please e-mail me at philspan@bucky.win.bright.net. The
more help we can get, the more kids we can make smile. Thank you for your
time and consideration. Sincerely, Leanna.

- 8/18/96 - My daughter mistook my batting for a 90"x90" quilt for stuffing and

double thickness for the batting and all the damage was done on one
thickness. I'm still a beginner and don't know if you can "patch"
batting or if it'll create lumps. Any help would be appreciated!

- 8/13/96 - Hi. I am trying to find a source (book, magazine, pattern, whatever) with
pictures of the different costumes used by dancers in Mexico. I know that
the various regions of the country have costumes unique to each area, but I
need either pictures (the more detail the better. . .) or even patterns (I
can dream, can't I?). I would like to make an appliqued quilt using the
designs.
Also, while I'm at it, I don't remember where I saw this, but several years
ago there was an article on a woman who made quilts designed to look like
stained glass windows done by Frank Lloyd Wright. If anyone knows of a book,
pattern or magazine for these, please let me know. My e-mail address is:

- 8/11/96 - Hello! I have a question about strip piecing i.e. for a nine patch.
Once you sew your strips together and then you take your rotary cutter and
cut the strip into smaller units, don't you have a bunch of loose stitches?
I realize that you'll sew over the loose stitches to put the block together,
but still, my pieces will come apart with the slightest amount of tugging.
This doesn't seem like it's going to make a very sturdy quilt to me. PS I'm
doing this all by hand...haven't made the plunge to buy a machine yet.
Thanks for any tips. Linda...75553.3574@CompuServe.COM

- 8/10/96 - Searching For Husband of Anonymous Quilter
Members of the Elkridge Evening Quilters are searching for a man living
near the Maryland/Pennsylvania border who sold a basket of partially
completed Dreseden Plate quilt blocks and fabrics (pinks and light
blues) at a yard sale for a dollar about four to five years ago. When
questioned about them, he indicated that his wife had recently died of
cancer and that he wanted someone who would take the time to complete the
quilt in her memory to purchase the fabric.
We would like to find this gentleman to let him know that our group
completed the quilt in honor of his wife. We raffled it off and donated
the $1,531 in proceeds to a local family to help offset costs for their
young daughter's bone marrow transplant.
Our group is aware that we have limited information regarding this
gentleman and his wife, but we would appreciate any help in locating him
so we may complete the circle and learn more about the quilter behind the
quilt. We ask that anyone who might have any clue as to the identity of
this man or his wife to contact the Elkridge Evening Quilters at:
abutlien@capaccess.org.
Thank you in advance for helping us with this search.
