Deborah
Roberts' Personal Statement
"Unfortunately,
it is not uncommon for a quilt owner to have a loss of, or damage to a
quilt. When this occurs, it amazes me, that these wonderful creations,
whether old family heirlooms, new innovative designs, or beautifully quilted
garments, are not covered by insurance. Losses occur even in the most simple
circumstances and rarely is there a way to recover from the loss of a treasured
quilt unless it is insured. Even in the best of situations, insurance companies
today settle for cost of materials only, unless the value can be substantiated
with a written appraisal by a qualified quilt appraiser."
Appraisals
of Quilts and Quilted Textiles
As a service to the quilt
world, the American Quilter's Society has developed a program that certifies
appraisers who are qualified to give insurance and fair market values for
quilts, quilt related textiles and wearable art. These appraisers have
been tested on their knowledge of fabrics, dates, construction techniques,
their ability to recognize patterns and regional influences and on their
awareness of values in their geographic areas. They have also agreed to
a Code of Ethical Practices. You can be confident of the expertise of the
appraisers certified by the American Quilters Society.

Care for Today
Is Your Quilt
Worth More Than A Blanket?
Why
Do You Need A Quilt Appraisal?
- To establish a quilt's
replacement value for insurance purposes.
- To purchase a "Fine
Arts Floater"
- To determine value for
donation, gift, or estate purposes for the IRS
- To provide to a show that
requires insurance and or appraisal.
- Protection during shipping
- A thoughtful addition to
a quilt given as a gift
When considering your need
for an appraisal, remember that in addition to the damage your quilt or
garment may sustain under normal circumstances, these items have become
the targets of theft, and also victims of disasters such as flood and fire.
Many quilts and garments as well, have disappeared while being shipped
to shows across the country. Most quilt and wearable art show organizers,
gallery owners, and shippers, are now requiring appraisals for items they
display, so their insurance requirements will be met. If you are a quilt
owner, collector, dealer, quilt maker, wearable art maker or dealer, one
thing you should do is seek an appraisal from a certified quilt appraiser.
Types
of Appraisals
There are three basic types
of appraisals.
- Insurance Appraisals -
This appraisal determines what the replacement value of your quilt or garment
is. In other words, how much money it would cost you to replace your damaged
or lost quilt with one of like and kind. Whether examining a quilt/quilted
textile, the information must be in a simple short form since an appraisal
is not a documentation. A written appraisal by a qualified appraiser leaves
little doubt with your insurance adjuster on a replacement value for the
lost quilt.
- Fair Market Appraisals
- This appraisal is for a market value - that figure arrived upon between
a willing buyer and a willing seller, both with knowledge. An AQS certified
appraiser is current with the market, both antique and contemporary, including
auction and gallery as well as private sales, to the best of their ability.
The Fair Market appraisal is an opinion and not a guarantee.
- Tax Donation Appraisal
- This appraisal is for a client who wants to donate a piece for any reason
to any type of organization or place, or to establish a value for an estate/family,
often after a death.
Contacting
an Appraiser
Whatever the reason for the appraisal
of a quilt or quilted garment you should always seek the best evaluation.
An AQS certified professional provides each client with consistent quality
of work whether the piece is antique, contemporary or any other style.
