Subject: saving mail
Date: Sat, 13 Dec 1997 22:50:59 -0600
I use Microsoft exchange, but it seems to me the way I save email
would work for anyone. I have a folder set up with my name and files
under the folder with specific subjects ie, Kaffee-Klatch,quilt patterns,
addresses that I want to check out later, etc. If I want to save the whole
message I drag the whole thing. If I want to save part of it ,I delete
what I don't want to save. I'm not sure if this is any easier than
other suggestions I've read, but it's another way to do it and it is
obviously EASY. Have fun and enjoy all hustle and bustle of
the season. Sharon

Subject: quilting old tops
Date: Sun, 14 Dec 1997 00:56:41 -0500
I collect old quilts, tops, and sets of blocks, when I can find them and
they are not too expensive. I also do a lot of my own quilts. But after
winning Viewer's Choice for my own quilts at our guild's last two shows,
and feeling a bit of hostility starting, I decided that the next two years,
the time between quilt shows, will be dedicated to hand quilting the
antique things, and only machine quilting my own quilts.
Our next show will be in October and I have kept my vow. I will have a
couple of brand new machine quilted baby quilts to show, and at least 4
full size antique tops I have hand quilted. Then, after October, I will go
back to hand quilting my own quilts, although a lot of the antique quilts
will be left undone.
I really feel the antique tops deserve hand quilting. Not very many older
quilts were machine quilted, and I feel it would look out of place. I get
just as much satisfaction in completing another woman's vision as I do my
own.

Subject: Re: Kaffee-Klatsch 12/12/97
This is in response to Jeanette House in Australia who is having
trouble machine quilting with metallic thread. Oddly enough, I was
talking to my sister the other nite and she was having the same
trouble. She was using a # 12 metafil needle and Sulky thread and the
thread kept breaking on her.
Someone suggested that she re-read the article on decorative threads
in Dec issue of QNM and it suggests using a # 14 needle and loosening
the tensions even if you have to take them as far as they will go.
She then tried a regular #14 needle and loosened tensions all the way
and her machine quilted like a dream. I've never tried this but am
willing to try anything anyone suggests.
Good luck.

Subject: finished quilts
Date: Sun, 14 Dec 97 10:37:31 -0500
I have been lurking on this list for some time. Finally I have finished
two quilts this month. One is a basic Trip around the world and the
other is a variation of a many trip pattern. I machine quilted both
using a batting that was new to me. It was Hobbs soft poly batting. I
pinned really closely and quilted with a straight stitch using a straight
stitch foot . It worked better than my walking foot and I could really
see where I was going. Both quilts came out great. Has anyone used this
batting before? I am hoping that it holds up as well as it quilts.

Jeanette : re-Metallic Thread
It sounds like you need to loosen your top tension a little. If the bobbin
thread is still pulling to the top, you can also tighten your bobbin casing
tension just a bit. I would try loosening the top tension first, though,
because on most machines that is the easiest tension to play with.

Subject: Difficulty machine quilting/Metallic thread
In answer to a question from Jeannette concerning her difficulty
machine quilting with metallic thread, I suggest she use needles made
specially for metallic thread. Schmetz Needles makes a needle called
Metallica , which is made for this purpose. I have used them and they truly
make a difference. My thread continued to break with a regular sewing
machine needle, until I used the Metallica needles. The thread glided
through so nicely and I was much happier with the machine quilting results.
Good luck Joanne with your project. I hope these needles work for you.

I had asked about information on Quilt-O previous to this post. I haven't

where to go for the address. I believe that Jane of the Feedsack Club

Subject: Re: Using Metallic Thread
When using metallic thread you need to open up the tension, more than you
ordinarily would. And use a good quality silk or cotton thread in the bobbin
as well, cheap thread is more likely to knot or break if used in the bobbin
with metallic thead for top stitching. Hope this helps, I got this tip
originally from Patchwork and Quilting Ideas magazine, Spring 1997 issue.

Subject: starch (resending post)
In the 12/6 digest, Jade asked about why you might want to use starch.
Jade, in my mind this topic is closely related to the debate of "to wash or
not to wash." Many quilters (myself included) always wash every bit of
fabric as it comes into the house. This removes the fabric "sizing" and
preservation chemicals, shrinks the fabric, tests for color fastness. It
also removes chemical smells from the fabric. This makes the fabric more
pliable, less stiff. Perfect for hand quilting, which I love.
However, many quilters who do machine work and use rotary cutters like the
stiffness of unwashed fabric. It is a little easier to handle with the
machine and rotary cutter. Those who wash their fabric (but want the
stiffness of unwashed) can simply use a spray starch or sizing and iron!
Hope this helps!

Subject: Getting graphite markings off fabric...
I have seen a discussion on getting pencil markings off fabric...do a
practice piece on a piece of muslin....mark that muslin well with a #2
pencil....now, in a well ventilated kitchen, on your kitchen formica
countertop, dampen a WHITE rag with household Ammonia and gently wipe
over the pencil mark, using the countertop for stability...you will see
it disappear before you eyes. If it is very dark, I have poured the
Ammonia right onto the markings and let set until it disappears! Be sure
to thoroughly rinse out with cool water! Now that you have seen it in
action and KNOW it works, be sure to try a small out of site area on
your printed fabrics to see if they are fade resistant....good luck!

I used to make crepes a lot and recently have been thinking about dusting
off the old crepe pan ... maybe this will inspire me. Mable Hoffman's crepe
cookbook is the best. If I remember correctly, I think the answer is to
completely cool each crepe--flipping them over several times--before
putting them in the wax paper. And then letting them sit out for 10-15
minutes at least. Refrigerate, I would say. Don't freeze. And then, for the
final touch: don't pull the crepe off the wax paper; instead gently remove
the wax paper from each crepe. It may seem like a small difference, but it
works.

barely quilted since she started doing web pages.

Subject: Color Wheel 5" charm swap
Hi all! Here is some information about the charm swap I've been
participating in for the past year or so.
It is called the Color Wheel Charm Swap. "Color wheel" because each month
focuses on a different color or similar theme. It is a great way to boost
your stash with colors you are missing. Also, you get a large variety of
fabrics of similar, blending colors, but different tones and textures. They
really add spice (not to mention "charm") to your quilts!
We swap 5" washed, ironed charms on a monthly basis. You can sign up for
the whole year, or any month that interests you! Each month there is a
different hostess from the group, so no one gets too tired of hosting.
(Although you do not have to be a hostess, if you don't want to.) It is a
central exchange. All in the swap send ten packages of ten different
charms to the hostess by the 20th of the month. She swaps the charms and
sends them at the end of the month. If you would like more details, or
would like to join, contact the swap coordinator -- Carol.
Here is a quick list of the monthly color themes for 1998.
January - Pink
February - Green
March - Gold/Yellow
April - White/Neutral/Ivory/Beige
May - Blue
June - Red
July - Orange/Brown (half and half)
August - Purple
September -Teal/Turquoise
October - Grey/Black
November - Christmas Fabrics, any color
December -Plaids, any color
Hope some of you decide to join!
TTYL,
Heidi

I am currently making quilts for sick children who are wards of the state in

infants who have been abused or neglected, and older children who are
terminally ill or severely disabled. I would love to have some help with this
project because all the items that the hospital receives for these children
come from donations and the more I can make the more I can give to these needy
children. If you would like information on how you can help me with this

Subject: My Sanity
I am in the middle of making little Christmas tree ornaments out of scraps.
Is there an easy and CLEAN way of ironing the fusible webbing on to the back of the fabric? I have exhausted all approaches but the darn stuff still sticks to my iron. I finally tried ironing with a piece of paper on the bottom, the fabric face down, and the webbing on top of the back of the fabric ... well, the webbing peeled off easily but the edges of the fabric were literally glued to the paper on the bottom. I am spending an inordinate amount of time trying to unglue everything!
... there MUST be an easier way !!!
(It's strange - I don't NEED these little ornaments but now that I have run into this problem, I am determined to find out how to do it correctly and EASILY !!! You'd think with all the baking, present wrapping and tree to decorate, etc. that I would give up the ghost - I really think I've lost it!!)

Diane,
I'm new to this group and have enjoyed reading all the interesting
subject discussions. About quilting old tops, I do hand quilting for
other people and often get 'old tops' to do. If they are in decent
shape, I agree that they should be quilted. After all that work the
maker put into it, it is nice to see them finished. I usually use a
cotton batting and muslin or solid backing, which is what they would
have used for many quilts years ago. They are fun to do as many are
scrap quilts and seeing the many different fabrics is great.
Many people ask me why so many of these old tops were never finished.
Some people have inherited several tops from an ancestor and want to
have them finished. I imagine that many of these ladies got to the
point where they could continue to piece, but could no longer quilt due
to poor eyesight or arthritis in their hands. I hate the thought of
this happening someday. Guess I'd better get as much done in the next
20 years as I can.
To All: I love Hawaiian quilting! I have made several pillow but kept
saying I wanted to make a large Hawaiian quilt (one pattern, not
blocks). First, it took me a couple of years to decide what color I
wanted to do. But, in October, I bought the fabric - 9 yards of a rich
purple and 9 yards (for background) of a very subtle white on white
print. I have promised myself that after the holidays, I am going to
get started on it. It may take me years to finish, but I WILL START
IT!! Anybody else out there a Hawaiian quilt lover?
Looking forward to getting to know you all better.

Hello Fellow quilters,
I am joining you from Monroe, Louisiana. I teach in Family and Consumer
Sciences at the university here. Like Kathleen I find myself to be a
member of a dying breed of Home Economists. It seems that sometimes we
are so anxious to keep up with the times that we lose precious lessons
from the past.
My husband says I have quilts everywhere. It is my way to relax. it
also seems to me that we share a basic human need to create beauty in
our surroundings. I admire our ancestors who did so much with so
little.
I recently worked out a simple Guardian Angel pattern for my
grandaughter which I will share as soon as I am organized enough to get
the information on line.
I enjoy piecing by hand. At the moment I probably have four tops
started, 5 or 6 tops ready to quilt, I guess my husband is right, I do
have quilts everywhere.
I look forward to sharing ideas

Hi, I am a new member to Kaffe-Klatsch, so I thought I would introduce
myself. I'm Janet We have 3 small children, ages 1,3, and 5. Between the kids, horses, house and my business, I don't get much time for quilting, but I have a goal to try to do one thing that I enjoy every day. My business is SewUnique, maker of notions for sewing & quilting.
Another use for starch: when the fabric is really wrinkled, starch it
so you can get it flat enough to use. I also use it on patterns which
have bias edges, to help control the stretching. Use the starch before
cutting pattern pieces. I also use starch as "glue" when pressing
under edges of applique pieces, while using cut up file folders for
patterns. I like the starch which comes in a bottle "Vano" is one
brand. I dilute it as neccesary to achieve the results I am after.
Hope this information is useful.

Subject: if I'd known I would love quilting this much...
Nancy, I have 2 suggestions for you. Join a quilting group. Not just a
big guild with lots of members, but a small neighborhood group where you
can work closely with a few other quilters. I found one from a posting
at the corner grocery store. It said something like neighborhood ladies
interested in meeting to quilt and exchange ideas call.....
I did and it was the best experience. New friends as well as a variety
of experiences to learn from and real lpeople to help you out.
The second would be to set up a work area. After 6 years of quilting, I
just did this a few months ago and it has made much more active. I have
a folding office table like the kind you buy in the office supply store,
about 5 or 6 feet long. on it I have my machine, work light, and
cutting mat and rotary cutter. This means that you don't have to set up
and put away your work every time you want to work on it. Mine is in
the livingroom, because I have found over the years that I don't like to
be sent to my room to quilt, I like to be where the action is.
goos Luck,
Kim

Started out using a smaller needle rather than wasting my time with the larger
ones in the first place. I'd suggest starting with a size 10 between. It will
be a tad more difficult to start smaller, but well worth it in the end.

Hi everyone, I've been reading this chat list for awhile and have been
enjoying it but until now have not jumped in, I guess it takes awhile to
feel comforable about adding my 2 cents worth. Anyway in response to the
person quilting the baby quilt that got a hole in it I would just applique
something over it instead of trying to replace it, you said their was
flowers in one of the fabrics, why not make a larger version of the flower
and use that, or if their is a theme print, such as teddy bears or ? use
that as a applique, sometimes some of the best quilts are made because of
a mistake.
The startch question, I wash all my fabric when it comes into the house
for all the reasons other people have mentioned but in issue # 57 of
Quiltmaker magazine, there was a article about starching and I was just
starting to work on a quilt with alot of triangles and I was not looking
forward to sewing all those bias seams so I tried the starch method and it
worked GREAT, you didn't even realize you were sewing on the bias, then
when I was finished I just washed it out before quilting. I probably would
not starch everyting but for triangles it worked great. Phyllis

Subject: Nancy from Loveland Ohio's question
Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 13:55:59 -0500
Dear Nancy,
What an interesting question (If I knew I would be doing this much
quilting, I would have. . .) you asked. I'm sure you'll get a lot of good
information on a variety of topics. You really thought of a creative way
to get input from quilters.
Here's my response: If I knew I was going to be doing this much quilting
when I got my sewing maching about 10 years ago, I would have gotten a
different one. I like my Singer most of the time, and Lord knows I've put
many miles on it, but there are some features available on other machines
that I really like. One is the automatic needle down feature, so you don't
have to keep juggling so many balls at once when you're piecing or
quilting. Another is an automatic even feed feature so I don't have to
keep putting my walking foot on and taking it off. I would also like to
sample the buttonhole stitch, mock hand quilting stitch, and a few other
WOW! stitches I've seen on some new machines. Maybe when my old machine
breaks down or when I feel justified in replacing it I'll get a fancy new
one. Until then, I make do just fine.
I also wanted to tell you that I really like just about any book published
by That Patchwork Place. The pictures and the grayscale drawings in their
books are nice and the instructions are usually clear. "Rotary Riot" was
the first book by TPP that I bought.
I think others out there should take Anne's cue and think up some more
stimulating questions to post.

Hi, quilters,
I was reading the postings on pre-washing fabric and wanted to weigh in on
the subject.
For me, quilting is something I do for enjoyment. I do not enjoy washing
fabric and ironing it. Therefore, I don't pre-wash. I'm not saying I
would never pre-wash something, I just don't do it as a rule. I have been
known to test fabric for colorfastness, especially if I'm joining very dark
or bright pieces to very light. I have never been burned by having a
fabric bleed after it's in a quilt, but someday I probably will. I'll just
deal with that when it happens and enjoy my crisp, new fabric until then.

Me! Me! Me!!!! :0D Im currently appliqueing a Hawaiian style wall hanging.
The pattern is by Faye Labonaris (sorry if I mangled the spelling on that. I
dont have the pattern in front of me) and is called The Sea Around Us, A Tribute
To Rachel Carson. It's got a cut out starfish in the center, then scallop
shells all around that, then waves (dreading those waves as they are just slits
cut in the fabric. What the heck do I do at the end of the slit?!) then pairs
of dolphins jumping out of waves all the way around. I found a beautiful blue
and green batik for the design that reminds me of the ocean and I've put it on a
plain white background. Actually, I found the fabric and fell in love with it,
but couldnt justify spending the money not knowing what I'd use it for. I
couldnt find anything I liked to go with the batik that looked better than the
plain white, so I went with it. I havent done all that much applique. OK, so
I've done exactly 2 blocks in my entire life LOL I tend to jump in with both
feet anyway. It's coming out pretty well, if I do say so myself :0) Tell me
about your pattern, I'd love to hear about it.

Subject: Which Quilting Frame Do You Like?
Every year since I've gotten divorced, I've tried to buy myself one really
nice gift for Christmas ... something that made me feel special. This year
it's going to be a full-size quilting frame.
This frame is destined to be used for tying comforters, as that is what my
family usually requests. (I use a round frame for my hand quilting; I like
being able to turn it in whatever direction I wish.) And since most of the
quilts I make for family are king-size, my new frame will have to be able to
accommodate that size.
So far the leader, from the information I've been able to gather, is the Grace
frame. I can buy a kit to extend it to 148" and it has the fourth pole
available to hold the batting separate, which I thought might come in handy
for those times when I use a double batt for extra puffiness. The Grace frame
is also able to be folded where it takes up only a few inches of space when
not in use. (The quilt stays on, of course.)
Do any of y'all have any other brands that you feel I should consider? Or
just some feedback on the Grace frame? This is a pretty big purchase and I
want to be happy with it!
Still stitching away,
Donna

Subject: My Sanity
I am in the middle of making little Christmas tree ornaments out of scraps.
Is there an easy and CLEAN way of ironing the fusible webbing on to the back of
the fabric? I have exhausted all approaches but the darn stuff still sticks to
my iron. I finally tried ironing with a piece of paper on the bottom, the
fabric face down, and the webbing on top of the back of the fabric ... well,
the webbing peeled off easily but the edges of the fabric were literally glued
to the paper on the bottom. I am spending an inordinate amount of time trying
to unglue everything!
... there MUST be an easier way !!!>
I haven't had any trouble with fusing, so thought I would respond to your
inquiry. What kind of webbing do you use? I've been making some small
patchwork ornaments (pattern from Marti Mitchell's book "A Quilter's
Christmas"). I use Heatnbond Lite for this and machine stitch the raw edges
with invisible thread on top and regular thread in bobbin. I trace the
pattern onto the webbing, cut it out, leaving a small margin beyond the
marking. Fabric is face down on ironing surface; iron on webbing, cut it
out along the marks when it has cooled. Seldom have anything sticking to
the iron, but whenever that has happened it came off after ironing it over a
piece of cloth.
I hope this will be of some help.

I think your problem is either the brand of fusable you a using or your iron
is way too hot. Try using "Heat and Bond Lite", I've had good luck with
that. And turn your Iron way down. It doesn't take much heat. You can
always Iron it again if it doesn't stick but you can't undo it once you iron
it too much.Try this on some scraps and see if you get better results.

Ann, get a teflon applique sheet. I finally ended up getting myself
two. If you only have one, put it on top. The iron on will stick to
the teflon and then peel right off. But once I bought the second
one I put one on the ironing board, put the item to be fused, and
then a teflon sheet on top. At first I thought I wouldn't use the
teflon
sheet that much. I've found it is one of the handiest and most

one with cotton. The cotton one had fewer puckers and I probably basted
and sewed about the same on both. The cotton batting sticks to the
fabric while the poly slides. In the past I did'nt want to invest more
money in the cotton batting, but now I think its worth paying a little
extra just to avoid the hassel of ripping out quilting because of
puckers and tucks.

Regarding sewing with metallic thread -- I
haven't tried this but I saw it last week on Sewing
with Nancy. She demonstrated it as though
sewing metallic thread on garments, but it would
probably work for quilts. She put the metallic
thread in the bobbin, loosened the tension on the
bobbin and put regular thread in the needle.
Then she sewed the project upside down so the
metallic thread would be on the top of the work.
Might work for quilts.

Subject: antique quilt tops
Dear Judy,
Three cheers for you for hand quilting antique quilt tops. Barbara Brackman
says "do not quilt anything over 50 years old".When you own a antique top
or blocks they are yours to do with as you please but to hand quilt them is
wonderful.I hope the antique quilt tops all have cotton batting.

Not very many older
quilts were machine quilted, and I feel it would look out of place. I get
just as much satisfaction in completing another woman's vision as I do my
own.
I add my feelings to Judy's, IMHO any old quilt top that has lasted this
long deserves to be hand quilted. I have completed several in the past few
years. I always use an all cotton bat, and reproduction fabric for the
lining, tho in one case the piecer had stored the lining with the top. I
carefully go over each top and repair any seams by hand, occasionally have
to replace a block because the fabrics have disintegrated. I've seen some
old tops that were recently machine quilted and it just seems such a waste.
The old tops have such character and many of the fabrics are fragile and
need to be handled gently. Like Judy, I too get satisfaction out of
completing another's work. I know several collectors of antique tops that
do not finish them because they take up less storage space unquilted.

Thanks so much to all my fellow quilters out there who helped me with my
"quilt as you go" question. I found the books you Georgia Bonesteel
books you recommended to me, and I can't wait to start my new project.
To Layne Rahbar in Athens: I too have accidently torn small holes in
quilts. I have tried different approaches to this; the best for me is to
applique over it. You could probably quilt around the applique piece and
make it part of the design. Once I cut a small piece of a wall hanging,
and buttons became the design of choice! Applique is the Way!

Many thanks to the whole group. I am very new to it and you have really

This Newsweek website has the Diana cover on it:

It's a watercolor quilt design ready to happen. Don't know about copyright

by

and that looks like an interesting web site and it looks as if there's a

To Layne.
If you are considering covering the hole with applique anyway why not
find a piece of fabric with a flower big enough cut it out and applique
it over the hole broderie perse style? Just a thought.

I have several of my mother-in-laws unquilted tops...I am in a quandary about
this, she never quilted anything. Tied everything--and made many quilts...I
suspect that this is why they were unfinished...The quilts are done in
fabulously beautiful styles and so I really hat to just tie them, but that
wouldn't be in keeping with her usual way, and I want her grandkids to have
them...I love her so and want to do it as she would have. Someone help me
with this, please.

Hi All!
I'm new to this list so I'm introducing myself. I'm Carolyn from just
south of Boston, MA. Although years ago I had a thriving business making
commissioned quilts, I'm more of a quilting wannabe lately. A quilt
drooler and heavy buyer of fabric, books, quilt gizmos, and collector of
sewing machines. I have no time to actually get down and quilt though.
Oh, alright! I do a little bit in guilt-ridden snatches, but not near
enough. Boy, when I find time though, will I ever be ready! I have a
home-based business selling mathematics curriculum, I homeschool my
children, and am secretary to by husband's home based business.
Kim, I appreciated your posting. Perhaps if I follow your advice
(quilting out in the open - not being sent to my room) I will finally get
in some quilting.
Happy Stitching,
Carolyn

Hi,
Usually when I go shopping for fabric I just fall in love with something
and buy it. Never start out with anything in mind, unless I am going to a
class and need some more fabric to go with what I already have. I do
collect Teddy Bear prints and Angels. I am making (slowly) a Bear Paw
block using teddy bear fabrics. Am sure it will get done someday, but
don't know when. I do buy theme fabrics - you know outdoors or dogs or
little kids or garden to make specific wall hangings. I love to do that.
Don't spend all your money. I try not to.
Take care of you,
Tracy

If i knew i was going to do this much Quilting.
.............I would have learnt to be organised.
.............I would have bought fabric, when it was on sale.
.............I would have saved all those safety pins.
.............I would have trained my 10 cats not to try each quilt out as i
make it.
............I would have listened more when i was taught to sew at school.
.............I would have bought a Rotary Cutter sooner.
But looking back i would have also missed out on too much fun making them.
Why because i never used a pattern on the first ones. All i did was cut and
sew.
And amazingly enough they all turned out ok.I may never be a top
Quilter,But ive had fun.
And all in all,Isnt that why we make them.Gifts of Love for family and
friends.
As long as we dont lose sight,Of the reasons we make these works of Art.
I always say,Each Quilt is a refuge when comfort and love is needed.
The closest we can come to a Hug is a quilt.
Merry Christmas to all on here.

Subject: Answer to crepe question
In answer to your question about freezing crepes and having them stick to
the wax paper, try Parchment Paper. It works wonderful. Absolutely nothing
sticks to it. Grocery stores do not carry it, but kitchen stores do. It
comes in a roll like wax paper or foil. Try it, you will be glad you did.
There are many uses for parchment paper. Good Luck. LuAnn
