Quilt – Auto-Away
Introducing
Auto-Away

The typical room is empty nearly half the time. Auto-Away automatically detects when rooms are unoccupied so you never waste energy heating or cooling empty spaces again.

Climate control meets cruise control

Quilt’s built-in occupancy detection knows when rooms are empty and automatically saves energy without compromising comfort. The system switches unoccupied rooms to Away mode, then restores your preferred temperature when you return. Set it once, and Quilt works around your life to maximize comfort and minimize utility bills.

How It Works

The first heat pump with intelligent occupancy detection

Auto-Away uses advanced radar embedded in the Indoor Unit to detect occupancy with remarkable precision. Unlike basic motion sensors that miss stationary people, our radar can detect humans even when they’re completely still — distinguishing people from furniture while protecting your privacy.

Case Study

Smart features,
smarter savings

In a test with a three-bedroom home in the San Francisco Bay Area, we saw a 44% reduction in energy use as a result of Quilt's smart features compared to maintaining the home at one temperature.*

* Test was run during heating season, over several days of similar weather conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Auto-Away was rolled out to all installed Quilt systems through an over-the-air update. Once your app is updated, you’ll see Auto-Away available in your settings for each room. You can opt in, customize the detection time-frames, and explore how the feature detects your presence in different rooms.

To allow for preconditioning, if a room is set to heat/cool manually or via schedule, Auto-Away will not activate until the next time the room is occupied. Auto-Away will become even more integrated with Quilt smart features over time

Quilt takes privacy very seriously, especially when it comes to your home. Auto-Away uses radar and on-device processing to precisely detect the presence of humans but doesn’t capture any data beyond that. Radar data is much less detailed than camera data and the feature is designed to simply transit the current state of a room (occupied or unoccupied) to the Quilt cloud.

For example, the Quilt system determines if the living room is occupied or not, at the present moment, but doesn’t capture whether you’re napping on the couch or hosting a party. This enables you to save the maximum amount of energy while also protecting your privacy.

Yes, Auto-Away can detect when a child is in a room, although detection accuracy currently varies a bit with size, especially when there is minimal movement. This means Quilt may not detect occupancy while a small child is napping. While we work on improving our reliability here, we want parents to be aware of the potential for Auto-Away to trigger during a nap.

The occupancy detection algorithm has been tuned to detect average-sized adults. Larger pets generally trigger detection, but our technology is not yet explicitly designed to detect or reject pets.
